Guidelines for Submissions

All correspondence related to the submission of articles should be addressed to the Executive Editor and Secretary at arctos-editor@kfy.fi. Before submitting an article, please consult the guidelines below and ensure that your article adheres to them.

General Style

Submissions for publication in Arctos should be written in English, French, German, Italian, or Latin. British and American English are both acceptable, provided that usage is consistent throughout the article. The author is responsible for the linguistic editing of the article. The length of the article should not exceed 10,000 words, including notes and bibliography. Where appropriate, separate appendices may be added at the end of the text.

Each article should include an introductory section presenting the research background and previous studies, the research question, the material, methods, and theoretical framework, as well as, where appropriate, the key concepts. The introduction should be followed by the main analytical sections, and the article should conclude with a summarizing section in which the research question is clearly addressed.

The author should also provide an abstract of approximately 200 words, along with 5–10 descriptive keywords. The abstract should summarize the topic, research question, and approach, and concisely present the main finding or argument of the study.

The annual deadline is at the end of August.

Submission

Articles should be submitted by e-mail to the Executive Editor and Secretary at arctos-editor@kfy.fi. The article should be submitted in two versions: one editable text file and one PDF file. The e-mail should also include the author’s name, affiliation, postal address, and the title of the article. The author’s name should not appear in the article itself. Please refrain from using self-identifying references so as not to compromise the double-blind review process. Please ensure that your submission complies with the stylistic guidelines of Arctos.

It is the policy of Arctos not to review articles that have been published elsewhere or are currently under consideration for publication elsewhere.

Editorial Procedure

Arctos and its publisher, the Classical Association of Finland, are committed to promoting in their activities the peer review guidelines of the Finnish Association for Scholarly Publishing (Vertaisarviointi | Tiedekustantajat), as well as the principles set out in the Responsible Conduct of Research guidelines issued by the Finnish National Board on Research Integrity TENK (Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) | Finnish National Board on Research Integrity TENK).

In general, all articles published in Arctos undergo a double-blind peer-review process. All submissions are initially assessed for suitability by the Editorial Team in collaboration with the Editorial Advisory Board. Submissions selected for peer review are sent to two academically qualified reviewers, who are asked to evaluate the scholarly merits of each submission and to provide an editorial recommendation.

To ensure impartiality, a strict double-blind review policy is followed: the identities of both authors and reviewers are concealed from one another. In cases where the author’s identity is evident – for example, because the submission is a continuation of the author’s previous work – the manuscript may, with the author’s consent, be sent for peer review under the author’s name.

On the basis of the reviewers' recommendations, the editors make the final decision regarding the article. The editors may decide that the article is (1) accepted in its present form or with minor revisions, (2) conditionally accepted pending major revisions, (3) rejected with an invitation to revise and resubmit, or (4) rejected without invitation to revise and resubmit. In general, two positive evaluations are required for publication. Once the review process has been completed, the Executive Editor informs the author about the editorial decision and provides a summary of the reviewers' comments.

In exceptional cases, the editors may decide to publish contributions without subjecting them to peer review. Since 2015, all peer-reviewed articles have been marked with the peer-review label of the Federation of Finnish Learned Societies.

The final corrections are always made by the contributors themselves, who are also required to provide a reasoned list of the corrections made. After publication, authors receive one author’s copy of the printed issue, as well as a PDF file of the complete issue and a separate PDF file of their own contribution.

Text formatting and footnotes

The submitted text should be paginated and double-spaced throughout. Times New Roman, font size 12, is preferred, but other common Unicode fonts are also accepted. For Greek, a Unicode font must be used. The text must not include any additional formatting, such as styles or headings. Quotations from ancient Latin authors and terms in Latin should be italicized. Quotations from modern authors, regardless of language, should be enclosed in quotation marks.

References should be inserted using the word processor’s footnote function (Times New Roman, font size 10, double-spaced). Each footnote should include the author’s surname, year of publication, and page numbers. If multiple works are cited in the same footnote, they should be separated by a semicolon (e.g., Haslam 1993, 11–26; Krauss – Kaiser 1965, 50–54).

Please note that in Arctos, in-text references are generally not used. If it is necessary to refer to a work within the text, do so as follows (do not use f. or ff., but provide exact page references):

  • Kraus – Kaiser (1965, 13–19) argue that…
  • …as twice noted by Pack 1960, 142–45, 149–51.

Ancient sources

References to Latin authors should follow the system used in Thesaurus Linguae Latinae, and references to Greek authors should follow the conventions of the Oxford Classical Dictionary. Abbreviations of titles should be italicized. Note the use of Arabic numeral and commas instead of dots:

  • 3,21
  • Nem. 6,2
  • ann. 3,15
  • Brut. 62

Epigraphical and Papyrological Sources

Abbreviations of epigraphical publications should follow the standard of L'Année épigraphique (AE), supplemented where necessary by Supplementum Epigraphicum Graecum (SEG). References to papyrological publications should follow the Checklist of Greek, Latin, Demotic and Coptic Papyri, Ostraca and Tablets. Roman numerals should be used to indicate the volume:

  • CILVI 9871
       • IG XII 2, 157
       • SEG XL 235
       • P. Oxy. XLV 3241

Modern sources

All publications cited should be listed in a separate bibliography at the end of the text. The entries should follow this format (journals should be referred to using the abbreviations in L'Année philologique):

  • BOOKS F. S. Krauss – M. Kaiser 1965. Artemidor on Daldis, Traumbuch, Basel – Stuttgart.
  • ARTICLES R. Pack 1960. "Further Notes on Artemidorus", TAPhA91: 146–151. https://doi.org/10.2307/283850
  • CHAPTERS M. W. Haslam 1993. "Callimachus' Hymns", in M. A. Harder – R. F. Regtuit – G. C. Wakker (eds.), Callimachus(Hellenistica Groningana 1), Groningen, 111–125.

Please note that if a publication has a DOI or another persistent identifier, such as a URN link, it should always be included at the end of the reference.

Tables and Illustrations

Tables and illustrations are accepted in the publication. If the images are too large to be included in the text version (which is usually the case for high-quality images), their allocated positions, sizes, and captions should be indicated in the submission, and the images should be sent separately by e-mail to the Executive Editor and Secretary at arctos-editor@kfy.fi.

The publication of images must comply with copyright legislation. The author is responsible for obtaining permission from the copyright holders to publish the images.

Images are published in black and white. If the author wishes to have the images in color, they are responsible for any resulting costs.
