Author Guidelines

Ethnologia Fennica publishes original scholarly articles, review articles, essays, conference reports, and book reviews from the field of ethnology and other related fields. The text (including abstracts) should be delivered via the journal’s online submission system https://journal.fi/ethnolfenn/about/submissions. Authors need to Register and Log in prior to submission. 

Before submission, please read these Author Guidelines and the About the Journal page for the Journal's policies carefully. 

The language of the journal is English. Either British or American spelling can be used, but consistently.  It is recommended that the author has the final manuscript version proofread by a professional if English is not their native language.

All manuscripts are required in MS Word format.

Reporting the use of AI

Always mention if you have used generative AI or other AI-assisted tools for research and writing process, especially for creating or generating ideas and text. Consider mentioning if you have used AI as a tool for finding references and improving your own text.

Report the tool and how you have used it for your article. Example for reporting, placed at the end of the article, before references:

The Use of AI: “For this research paper, I have used [the name of the AI tool, e.g. Microsoft Copilot / OpenAI’s ChatGPT] for finding references and improving the grammar and structure of the text. I have reviewed the content carefully and take full responsibility for the article”.

Reporting is mandatory if you have used AI for, for example, creating or generating:

  • Data collection and analysis
  • Research questions
  • Literature reviews or summaries
  • Visualizations
  • Translation for more than some words or phrases

Consider reporting if you have used AI as a tool for editing, organizing, finding references or examples for or validating your own text, checking the grammar or translating single words or phrases.

Remember that you are always responsible for your own text and the used sources and references.

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it currently under review by another journal (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Style Guide.
  • The submission file is in MS Word format (.docx).
  • Where available, DOI’s for the references have been provided as a full link.
  • If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions of ensuring a double blind review have been followed.
  • I have read and I accept the terms of use as expressed in our Copyright notice, especially regards to the Creative Commons License.

Authors retain copyright and grant the journal right of first publication with the work simultaneously licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution License that allows others to share the work with an acknowledgement of the work's authorship and initial publication in this journal.
