Abstract

in this article I shall focus on those questions that concern everyday culture and cultural heritage. Firstly, I consider what their own culture and own environment is for people in everyday life. I examine what the essential elements are for belonging to one's own home area, in other words, what the essentials are in people's own local cultural identities. Secondly, I review the nature of cultural heritage, and how it is used at the local level in local development both in tourism and as foundation for local identity. Finally, I analyse the relationship between culture in everyday life and cultural heritage, using as an aid the concepts of culture and different levels of institutional power. My principle question is: What should be sustained in culture in terms of sustainable cultural development? Is it, as usual, cultural heritage or some other elements of culture?
