Call for submissions: Special issue on Telling Queer Lives (SQS 1/2024)

We invite various kinds of texts, including research articles as well as other genres of research writing (essays, commentaries, reviews, interviews) for SQS Journal’s special issue. Artistic contributions and forms of artistic research are also welcome. We hope to receive diverse contributions from cultural, literary, arts, media, and historical studies. These may focus on different forms of narrating queer lives and queer life-writing, such as the thematics of experience and memory, feelings and affects, genres and the questioning of genre boundaries, cultural memory and ethics of life(story)telling.

The article contributions may focus on lives historical and present, the potentialities of proto-queer as well as established LGBTQIA+ identities. We also invite discussion on poetics, stylistics, narratology, resistant reading, (auto)biographical narration, autofiction and autotheory, and the multidisciplinary research of diaries, oral history and memory studies. Therefore, our title of telling queer lives can be understood as a call to explore telling/narrating lives queerly, or the queer telling of lives.

Topics may include but are not limited to:

  • new ways of conceptualizing queer research into past / present lives
  • queer forms and queer as an issue of form/style
  • the crossing of genre and gender boundaries in life-writing
  • queer temporalities in life-writing and the construction of life narratives
  • autofiction, autoethnography and the ethical issues of (minority) life stories
  • trans theory, critical race theory, intersectionality: different ways of understanding the ‘queer’ in queer lives
  • Animal studies, posthumanism, and entangled lives
  • the medium-specific queer possibilities of written life narratives

The deadline for article abstracts (max. 300 words) and ideas for other texts is on September 30th 2023 (30.9.2023). Manuscripts will be sent for peer-review / editing by the end of January (31.1.2024).

The first submissions, including the abstracts, will be sent to the editors: Kaisa Ilmonen (kailmo(at)utu.fi) and Joonas Säntti (joonas.s.santti(at)jyu.fi). Please do not hesitate to contact us for further questions.
