Abstract

The term domain is often used in sociolinguistics. The concept of domain has been developed by Joshua Fishman, founder of the sociology of language. The concept is relatively abstract and can be applied to various sociolinguistic theories, provided one accepts its macro-sociological basic character. Use of the term is an example of how an initially well-defined concept gradually loses a significant portion of its content; the term is used, relatively empty of content, even within academic research discourses.
