Abstract

This article focuses on editorials in two Finnish business newspapers from an ideological point of view. The aim is to describe the underlying ideological assumptions behind assessments expressed in the editorials. In addition, potential contradictions between assumptions are discussed. The results are based on an analysis of 20 editorials of Kauppalehti and Taloussanomat published in September 2001 and 2005. The theoretical basis of the study is Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis. According to discourse theory, ideology is approached as a phenomenon produced through discourse. Based on their content, the discourses in the editorials are divided into economic and political discourse. The economic discourse is based on the ideal of economic growth, globalization and stakeholder value, whereas the foundation of the political discourse lies in the ideal of neoliberalism, security of Western countries and protectionism. A few contradictions were identified and can be explained by the conflict of interest between the Finnish entrepreneurship and globalization.
