Abstract

This article discusses the visibility of literary translators in the literary reviews published in magazines and daily newspapers. In addition to the traditional qualitative view, the analysis takes a quantitative view to the data thus extending the discussion from earlier research to areas where it is possible to make more justified generalizations about how translators and translations are perceived in the media. The data consists of 66 literary reviews published in two Finnish newspapers and two magazines. The results indicate that the criticism that is often directed to the press because of its neglect of translators’ work is not totally justified. On the contrary, the visibility of translators in literary reviews seems fairly positive, although there are clear differences between individual papers and magazines.
