Abstract

Our study about the expression of senses in text and picture in the Finland-Swedish picture book published in the 21st century aims to discover how the borders between text and picture are dynamic and can change according to the situation. Through a qualitative close reading we have analyzed the expressions of the five physical senses, hearing, seeing, feeling, smelling and tasting, in both text and picture to see if the two media express the same or different senses. In this article we give examples of the most common expressions and discuss how the expressions in text and picture can change the interpreting situation for the reader. We have found that when both text and picture express the same sense, the reader’s possibilities to interpret the situation are reduced, while when a sense is expressed in only one of the media, the reader is left with a larger room for subjective interpretations.
