Abstract

The paper focuses on the pseudo-terminative construction of the type Lämpötila nousee yli kolmeenkymmeneen asteeseen (lit. 'the temperature rises up to above thirty degrees') apparently expressing the crossing of a threshold by means of the adverb yli, and at the same time the arrival at the threshold in question by means of an illative in -seen. This construction is used virtually synonymously with another type of construction in which the preposition yli takes a genitive form in order to express the crossing of a threshold. Data from a survey as well as from a text corpus analysed in this paper indicate that this construction has seen a steady increase in relative frequency. The author discusses various possibilities of semantic differentiation resulting from the coexistence of the two constructions. These possibilities are unlikely to have given rise to the pseudo-terminative construction, however. Its rapidly growing acceptance within the speech community can be attributed to the fact that it provides an alternative means of linguistic conceptualization. It is most likely the product of morphosyntactic analogy: With their requirements regarding argument directionality, the movement verbs preceding the lexeme yli have neutralised the original prepositional government.
