Abstract

ln the circumpolar world the use, significance and accessibility of traditional food in indigenous societies have been discussed widely. In the late 1990s I joined a Canadian research project on food security
in the Arctic areas. This project focused on food security of indigenous peoples and communities in North America, Eurasia and Greenland.
The research questions were developed in Canada for conditions of North America and Greenland, where indigenous societies have lived in isolation
until recently and importing southern food is a recent phenomenon.
