Åbo Akademi University the Swedish language university is situated in Turku in the southwest coastal region of Finland. Th e city borders on a large area of archipelago, with a partly Swedish speaking population. Th e coast dwellers in this area have, in recent years, either continued their livelihood according to their traditional culture, or moved in a direction of being in closer contact with other industries such as tourism, trade and information, technology, or as is often the case, chosen to combine a traditional and modern lifestyle. In the 1990s the university itself moved in the direction of promoting environmental studies, sustainable development, and ecological factors both in research and university education.
