Memory and the museum

Each of us has our memories, we all have our own unique history. Remembering is a tool with which we maintain the basic values of our uniqueness and individuality (Gibson 1995). Museums are part of our mechanism for remembering. Indeed, it is this need to remember that gives museums such a vital influence in society. Without them and similar institutions, such as libraries and archives, we would lack the capacity to control changes on the basis of sustainable development. (Sola 1997, 39-48.)
