Translating multilingual texts is still a new field of inquiry. This study discusses the translation strategies adopted by second-year translation students in an assignment where they translated part of Patricia Grace’s short story “The Dream” into Finnish. The strategies for dealing with the Maori passages in the story varied as to how much of the Maori was preserved and how many explanatory translations were included in the text. This was manifested in both the translations themselves and the accompanying translation commentaries. Many translators showed an in-depth understanding of the nuances relevant to representing an ethnic minority of another culture in a way that was not exoticising.
