Ääni, intersektionaalisuus ja ironian monitulkintaisuus Zadie Smithin novellissa ”Miss Adele Amidst the Corsets”

Abstract

Tutkin artikkelissani Zadie Smithin novellia ”Miss Adele Amidst the Corsets” (2019) queerin elämän kuvauksena ja siitä kertomisena. Analyysissä havainnollistetaan Smithin novellia tapausesimerkkinä käyttäen, kuinka queerista elämästä ja eettisesti lukijaa haastavista, yksilön yhteiskunnalliseen asemaan ja identiteettiin vaikuttavista risteävistä eroista kerrotaan novellimuodon kehyksessä. Kiinnitän huomioni kerronnan rakenteellisiin seikkoihin, etenkin kertojan ja henkilöhahmon väliseen suhteeseen ja sen vaikutuksiin novellin kokonaistulkintaan. Analyysini osoittaa, että kerronnan keinoilla, kuten vapaalla epäsuoralla esityksellä, on elimellinen rooli eettisiä ja kontekstoivia tulkintoja tehtäessä. Kohdeaineistoni nivoo queerin ja intersektionaalisuuden yhteen sekä kerronnan analyysissä että novellin tulkinnassa. 

”Miss Adele Amidst the Corsets” haastaa lukijaansa pohtimaan etenkin sukupuoleen ja rotuun liittyviä risteäviä eroja. Näiden risteävien erojen tarkastelun rinnalla kysyn, millä tavoin Smithin novelli esittää queerin päähenkilön ääntä ja mieltä, ja millaisia tulkintoja näistä esityksistä on mahdollista tehdä kerronnallisten äänten analyysiä hyödyntäen. Feminististä ja queer-narratologiaa sekä intersektionaalisuuden teoriaa yhdistäen pohdin artikkelissani, millaisia uusia avauksia etenkin ironian huomioiminen intersektionaalisuuden teorian kehyksessä voi tarjota sekä kertomuksentutkimukselle että intersektionaalisuuden hyödyntämiselle kirjallisuustieteessä.

Abstract

In my article, I examine Zadie Smith’s short story “Miss Adele Amidst the Corsets” (2019) as a description of the queer life. The analysis illustrates Smith’s short story as an example of how the intersecting differences, that challenge the queer life and ethically affect the reader’s social status and identity, are narrated within the framework of the short story form. I draw my attention to narrative structure, in particular the relationship between the narrator and the character and its effects on the interpretation of the entire story. My analysis shows that the narrative devices, such as free indirect discourse, can play a quintessential role in considering the ethics and contextual interpretations of a narrative. Smith’s story brings queer and intersectionality together the both in the level of analysis and interpretation of the short story. 

“Miss Adele Amidst the Corsets” challenges the reader to consider the intersecting differences between, particularly, gender and race. Moreover, by acknowledging these intersectional differences, I ask by what means Smith’s short story represents the voice and mind of the queer protagonist, and how and why the interpretations are shaped by these representations of narrative voices. Utilizing feminist and queer-narratologies and intersectional theory, I ponder what kind of new approaches, such as the consideration of irony within the framework of intersectional theory, it is possible to provide for both narrative theory and intersectionality in literary studies.
