Author Guidelines

Instructions to authors

The next deadline for submissions is November 15, 2024.

I Text

Please upload an anonymous file. Personal data shall be filled in in the metadata section of Journal.fi (do not put personal data inside your file’s metadata).

We publish only papers that have not been published in any other journal. Please note that even translations of earlier publications are not accepted.

Papers may be submitted electronically in .docx (MS Word) or .rtf (Rich Text Format) format.

The recommended language for the papers is Finnish, English, German or Russian. If you wish to publish an article in some of the Finno-Ugrian minority languages or some other language, please be in touch with the editor-in-chief before submitting. If you are not a native speaker of the language in question, proofreading before submission is strongly recommended.

The recommended length of the paper is 50 000–100 000 characters without spaces (in the Communications section 10 000–15 000). Please, use section and subsection headings. The headings should be numbered (1., 1.1., 1.2., 2., etc.) and, vice versa, the subsections should not be numbered without headings. Please note that you may be expected to abbreviate your text in case it is too long.

Please use italics for linguistic material and single quotes for glosses (e.g. muorra ‘tree; wood’). Avoid underlined text and other format changes.

References are made in the text (and not in footnotes) as follows:

“... since Itkonen (1950) it has been ...”, “... according to Honti (1998: 336–338) it is ...”, “... (cf. Setälä 1894: 278; 1897; 1912: 194–197).”

Special characters. If the paper includes uncommon special characters or non-standard fonts, please use the standard Unicode characters; you will find them on the website of Unicode Consortium.

Transliteration. When transliterating Cyrillic and other non-Roman scripts, this must be done in a consistent manner according to an established scholarly tradition (e.g. the Uralic Phonetic Alphabet a.k.a. the Finno-Ugric transcription system), and official standards (the International Scholarly System or ISO 9:1995).

Glossing of examples. Authors are strongly encouraged to follow the guidelines set out in the Leipzig Glossing Rules (http://www.eva.mpg.de/lingua/files/morpheme.html). Data examples should be presented as follows:

II Figures, maps, pictures and tables

Tables. The maximum table width is 132 mm. We can put a very large table across a whole (2-page) spread.

If you use footnotes inside tables, use letters (a, b, c...) and insert them below the table. Put the footnote letter manually inside the table cell and change it to superscript.

Please send all figures, maps and pictures as separate files, not inserted into the document. The resolution of images has to be at least 300 dpi. Place their names/numbers (e.g. PICTURE 1) to their intended places inside the document. Only if a figure or picture was created using the same program as the document (usually Word) can it be included in the document. Provide a caption for every picture/figure/table. The caption precedes a table but follows other figures/pictures.

The column width is 132 mm and page size is B5 (176 x 250 mm) – please, keep this in mind. The text in figures/maps/pictures has to be readable if the figure/map/picture has to be scaled down to fit in the page.

III Obligatory supplements

Less well-known abbreviations (for the names of languages, dialects, reference works and scholarly terms including glosses) should be explained at first mention and/or in a list at the end of the paper. All abbreviations should be understood without recourse to external sources.

Include also an abstract of 10–15 lines at the beginning of the paper. The abstract should be in English and contain very briefly the topic of the paper, the methods used, and the main results of the study.
