Abstract

This article approaches linguistic participation from the point of view of discourse and ideology through examples from interpreter-mediated encounters and internet discussion boards. The introduction examines how participation is conceptualized in a sample of definitions of discourse and ideology and specifies the ways in which these concepts are applied in the analysis of subsequent data examples. The analysis is divided into two parts. First, participation in discourse and ideology is examined in interpreter-mediated encounters dominated by the discourse of reporting and monolithic and monolingual language ideologies. Second, examples from internet forums illustrate the materialization of xenophobic immigration ideologies in everyday discourse. The article concludes with a summary of the analysis and a discussion of the challenges related to the analysis of discursive and ideological participation.
