Abstract

In this paper, we present a multidisciplinary research addressing fairness in a high-stakes language spoken language proficiency test in Finnish, National Certificates of Language Proficiency. The background of the research lies in studies on language assessment and (reversal) linguistic stereotyping and language attitudes. The focus L1 groups were Thai, Estonian, Finland Swedish, Arabic and Russian – all groups facing negative stereotyping in Finnish society. Altogether 49 speech samples of test takers of these L1s were rated on a digital platform by 44 raters of the test system. Based on the results of the previous research, the main hypothesis of the research was that the negative stereotyping of the L1 speaker groups might affect also even the professional raters and their ratings in relation to various proficiency criteria. The main focus was on the design of the research, the digitally gathered data and the multidisciplinary research methods that the design required.
