A true comparativist is always inclined
to refer to macro-social developments when s/he
is explaining comparative findings. Most often
the question is specifically about similarities or
differences in national cultures. Traditionally
there has been two dominant ways to treat
culture in comparative research. lt has either
been understood as a combination of contextual
variables or as an all-encompassing world view.
This article proposes a third way, Pragmatic
Comparativist's Approach. This pragmatic
approach stems from the fact that the research
setting in most comparisons is far from idea! to
traditiona! comparative approaches to culture.
The article provides a description of pragmatic
approach, comparing it systematically to
Contextual Variables and World View
Approaches. The article is concluded into four
recommendations to comparativists engaged in
administrative research.
