FROM CONTRACTARIANISM TO
LIBERTARIANISM - JAN NARVESON'S THEORY
Jan Narveson's theory of libertarianism is a social
contract theory which tries to explain that an orderly
society could develop from the starting point of a
Hobbesian state of nature even in the absence of an
overruling sovereign state power. Narveson claims
that, contrary to a widely held belief, cooperation is
the rational option to choose in a prisoner's dilemma
type of situation. Everybody has good reasons to
agree with everybody else to refrain from violating
other people's human rights, including property
rights.
