Abstrakti
The competence of the professional employees
and the organization as a whole, is one of the
knowledge intensive firms principal competitive
means. The ability of the firm to adapt to the market,
to utilize, store and re-use competence are critical
questions.
This paper studies management consulting firms
in a competence perspective. lt focuses on
competence on both the individual and the
organizational levels, as well as on the relationship
between these two levels. The aim is to gain
understanding of the characteristics in competence
structures in these kind of firms. Furthermore, the
paper focuses on the reasons for development of a
specific competence structure, and on how the
competence structure forms the organization.
Firms with differing attitudes toward competence
in the pros and in the organization are empirically
studied and analyzed with arguments basically from
the theoretical perspectives loose coupling and
institutionalization.
