Administrarive Studies, vol. 7(1988): 2, 97-105.
lnformation systems is a young multidisclipinary
field of research concerned with the development
and use of computerized information systems as
well as their impact on the individual, society and
organizations.
The author explores the relationship of
information systems to the related discipline of
organization theory. Among the several
organizational images used in research on
information systems, three in particular are
discussed - Weber's »iron cage», Smith's
»invisible hand», and Ouchi's »clan». Each
organizational image is subjected to a detailed
discussion and its contribution to the theory of
and methods for developing information systems
are examined.
A list of critical questions for a research
agenda on the conditions and factors effecting
the application of information technology in the
creation of different kinds of organization is
presented.
