A discussion on the role of telecommunications in
the socio-economic structure of developing countries
together with a description based on international
statistics of the availability of telecommunications
services in developing and industrialized countries
is presented in Section 1. A brief review of the
research tradition on telecommunications and the
development of societies is included in Section 2 and
an analysis of structual factors such as the impact
of technology, the necessity of information transmission, international competition in the
markets for telecommunications equipment, and
the financing of telecommunications by lending
agencies is presented in Section 3.
