This article aims at examining the contents of the research articles of the journal Informaatiotutkimus and their impact based on Google Scholar citations. It examines the development of research topics in the journal from 1981 to 2020 and compares the topics across the decades. We show the research strategies, data collection methods, communication channels and the social level of the research and how these are distributed across the decades. This research shows that the research published in the journal has moved from self-reflections towards empirical research. During the decades both information-seeking and information storage and retrieval have been popular topics along with library and information services research. The share of scholarly communication has increased during the last decade. The impact is moving – similarly to the research topics – from self-reflection towards information storage and retrieval and information-seeking, which reflects the changes in the field of library and information studies.
