Abstract

The study examines digital information skills of Finnish workshop youth (N=93). The data was collected using a digital skills test. Those who had completed only comprehensive school or vocational upper secondary education performed weaker than those who had completed general upper secondary education. No statistically significant differences were found by gender or age group. According to regression analysis, the only variables that were related to good information skills were other digital skills. Digital communication skills and information management skills were the most important predictors of information skills. In contrast, different uses of digital technology were not related to information skills but correlated with each other. According to this study, information skills, communication skills and information management skills are best improved when strengthened together. Strengthening these three skills could improve the information skills of the young people in the workshop.
