Abstract

In this article, we underscore the importance of updates to traditional perspectives on mediated interaction as the evolution of communication technology is rapid. We discuss new perspectives on the subject. We argue that from the perspective of interpersonal communication, two elements have become relevant in modern and increasingly common communication technology: The channel becomes a place and the importance of the relational level of communication increases. Communication technologies, such as immersive virtual environments, obscure the roles of the viewers and those viewed by bringing both into a shared virtual environment. Encounters within a shared environment, in turn, reinforce the parties’ experiences on the interactions and communication relationships with each other. Finally, we consider which elements will become relevant in mediated and virtual interaction places and spaces in the future. This article is based on the authors’ findings on social interactions within immersive virtual environments and video calls.
