Abstrakti

This study explores the internal and external factors of certainty and uncertainty that influence the editorial work of a scientific journal, as well as their broader impact on editors' well-being. The theoretical framework draws on research concerning tolerance of uncertainty and its implications for occupational well-being, alongside existing literature on editorial practices. The empirical data were collected through semi-structured individual interviews with members of the Mikael journal editorial board. The interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analysed using thematic analysis. Findings indicate that minimizing uncertainty is essential for ensuring the smooth functioning of editorial processes and fostering work-related well-being. While uncertainty can be addressed at the individual and team levels, certain external factors outside editors’ control, such as the punctual submission of peer reviews, also play a significant role. Although these external influences cannot be eliminated, they can often be collectively discussed and resolved. The study highlights the importance of proactive strategies to manage uncertainty in editorial environments to support sustainable and healthy work practices.
