Abstract

Research shows that practices that support compassion are an important part of a well-functioning organization. However, we have only little knowledge on how educational communities such as daycare centers build and develop their compassionate cultures. By compassionate cultures we mean the established and sustained ways of a community to notice the resentment and suffering of its members and support members in such situations. In this article, we examine the communal nature of compassion and its role in ECEC. Our article is based on the project “Expanding circles of empathy and compassion in early childhood education” funded by the National Board of Education in Finland. We present and analytically discuss a pedagogical model that was developed in the project to support educational communities in reflecting and developing their cultures of compassion through in-service training.
