Abstract

The work of early childhood education teachers, both in Finland and internationally, has started to include leadership tasks more than before. The change is explained by the emphasis of the pedagogy in the early childhood education and the increased research knowledge about the importance of leadership for the quality of early childhood education. In Finland, early childhood education teachers are responsible for the pedagogical activities of their teams, which is why teachers are also expected to have the ability to lead their teams. This research studies the extent to which the size of the kindergarten and the teacher's gender, age and educational background affect teachers' experiences of team leadership. The research data was collected using an online questionnaire modified from the team leadership questionnaire (TLQ) designed by Morgeson and colleagues (2010). A total of 1221 people working as early childhood education teachers responded to the survey. In addition, the study analyzes the relationship between these factors. According to our research, the effect of educational background, age, work experience and the size of the kindergarten on teachers' team leadership experiences is medium, interpreting the effect sizes. Work experience has the greatest effect on how teachers perceive the development of activities and the organization of teamwork in kindergartens.
