Abstract

This narrative study explores emotions constructed as embodied in relations between children in day care centres. Theoretically, the study leans on studies of embodiment and emotions in the context of education. The research question is: How are emotions constructed as embodied in the relations between children in day care centres? The research material consists of video and observation material, which was produced in two Finnish day care centres in groups of children aged 3–5 years. The research illustrates that emotions in relations between children are constructed dynamically as a weave of movement, gestures, and different styles of speech. Emotions appear as an entity of changing meanings and experiences that is constructed in a unique way in each moment. The research highlights the multidimensionality and subtlety of emotions constructed as embodied in relations between children, as well as raises to consider the emotional practices in day care centres.
