In the Finnish Examination for Authorised Translators, language and translation skills are tested with two translation assignments that are assessed on the basis of equivalence with the source text and target-language acceptability and readability. One of the assignments is in the field of law and administration; the other is selected by each candidate from among four special fields. The source texts are intended to pose relevant translation problems for the examinees. In this article, my aim is to find out what kinds of translation problems the source texts pose, and relate the problems to the requirements of the examination and to the typical characteristics of special-field texts. The material consists of the assessed translations in the language pairs German-Finnish and Finnish-German from the examinations held in 2012-2014. The results show that the translation problems in the material were mostly lexical and related to culture-specific special-field terminology, but syntactic and textual problems also occurred. The prevalence of lexical problems is in line with both the examination requirements and the nature of special-field texts, but the presence of syntactic and textual problems suggests that the examination also tests the candidates' overall language and translation skills.
