Abstrakti

The article presents results of a reception study in which viewers’ opinions of the quality of subtitling for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (SDH) were examined. The method for gathering data was group discussion, also called (focus) group interview. Two groups of 7 hard-of-hearing viewers watched a subtitled tv-movie and discussed the subtitles during the watching and afterwards. Compared to a survey, this method has the advantage of getting opinions of concrete subtitling solutions and problems. Accordingly, the findings concern the subtitles of one specific movie; in the discussions, however, the SDH was also more generally dealt with. The following topics were raised and discussed by the participants in detail: speaker identification, signaling linguistic variety and change of the language, timing, subtitling of auditive non-verbal information including music, as well as the use of colors, which caused difficulties for the participants with sight problems.
