Abstrakti

Epistemic rights refer to a person’s right to have access to reliable information, to be heard, and to participate in knowledge production (DECA n.d.). In our recent study, we used this framework to examine the work of Finnish public broadcaster Yleisradio’s (Yle’s) language units, who produce news in Russian, English and Ukrainian with the goal of providing speakers of languages other than Finnish and Swedish with the information they need to participate in society. Using interviews and qualitative thematic analysis, our study investigated the role of translation and machine translation in creating news and explored the journalists’ views of their work and its role in society. Our results revealed that the language units contribute to epistemic rights mostly through making reliable information accessible, but to a lesser degree in promoting ways to be heard and participate in knowledge creation.
