Globalisation and developments in ICT have given rise to “new language professions”, which is an expression used to refer to areas such as localisation and technical communication. This change is posing new challenges to the boundaries of translation studies as a discipline and to the training of translators. One of the interesting issues is the interface between translation and technical communication: What are the competencies required in these two areas and do they
meet? Should translator training meet the challenges of technical communication and how? What are the expectations of working life? This article explores the relationship between translation and technical communication from the viewpoint of competence and translator training.
