This paper presents a document drafted in the Finnish Association of Translators and Interpreters about using authentic translation tasks in translator training, as well as an example of such a translation task carried out at the University of Joensuu. A list of hints was set up by a working group within the association in 2006. During the autumn term, they were applied to the translation of a Guide for patients of the North Carelia Central Hospital into English and Russian by students in Translation Studies. The experience showed that using an authentic translation task was, although more laborious than a “traditional” exercise, a rewarding experience for both translator students and teachers.
