Abstract

The article reports on an on-line survey on the technological competences of Finnish translators carried out in the period of December 2012 – May 2013. The total number of responses was 238. The respondents have graduated from different universities, work with different language pairs, and specialize in different fields. One third of the respondents are male, more than half represent the younger generation (15% are aged 25 or younger, 39% are aged between 26 and 35).

The respondents' self-evaluations of their computer skills show a satisfactory level of competence. Most of the respondents are good at text processing and Internet surfing, and have some skills in computer maintenance. They are not very familiar with CAT tools, although some of them are active users of such software. Most of them have little or no experience with image processing, hypertext markup, and spreadsheet software.

All respondents are critical about the training in translation technologies they received at their universities. They also believe that computer-related skills are of great importance in translation practice nowadays.
