Perspectives on the Nomenclature of Canon Law

Abstract

This review aims to identify the terminological equivalents for the word “canon” (Greek κανών) which refers to a particular ecclesiastical rule in the corpus of canons of the Orthodox Church. The article seeks to clarify the Finnish equivalents of normative terms and finally to evaluate their usage in the Finnish corpus through a few case studies. The study also addresses the following questions: What meaning does a particular term give to the substance itself? What differences in the usage of terms can be found?
