Abstract

This article studies the discussion and decrees on the marital norms of the Orthodox clergy, especially the possibility of second marriages, at the Local Council of the Orthodox Church of Russia, which assembled in Moscow in 1917–1918. The purpose of this article is to look at the subject from the premises of Orthodox canon law. The sources of the article are mainly based on the minutes, protocols and documents collected from the Russian Federation State Archive in Moscow and the Russian Historical State Archive in St. Petersburg.

The conclusions emerging from the research material suggest that the views of canon law scholars at the Moscow Council revolved strongly around the core formed by the previous Councils of the Orthodox Church, which in turn played a decisive role in the conclusions of the 1917-1918 Moscow Council.
