Uncontrolled ‘controlled generational transitions’: The role of political youth and student organizations in political recruitment
for the Centre Party, the NCP and the SDP, 1970–2015
Political youth and student organizations have seldom been the interest of recruitment studies,
although a handful of studies suggest that these organizations provide their members with several
political resources that are useful for recruitment. This article evaluates whether political youth and
student organizations form their own recruitment pools for the future members of parliament (MP)
in Finland and whether the career paths of former youth organization members differ from nonmembers.
The results show that political youth and student organizations do form a significant
recruitment pool for MPs, as a quarter of all MPs can be described as being former youth activists.
Compared to other MPs, the former youth activists have a lot of pre-parliamentary political experience
and many of them have received a lot of help from their peers and older party members along
their career paths.
