The higher education of engineering in Finland followed the general picture of German speaking Europe. Formal technical education began on 1849, and the final exam of the Helsinki Polytechnic Institute was accepted as a MA degree since 1879. On 1908 Helsinki Polytechnic Institute was turned to be Helsinki University of Technology HUT. The titles of academic engineers and architects were fixed on the same year, but it took about 50 years before the system was fully recognized. A reason for this was the rap-idly developing field of education, and the emergency of secondary level engineering schools. The first doctoral degree from HUT was awarded on 1912, and the title of Dr. Sci (Eng.) was established on 1933. The titles of academic engineers and architects were finally fixed on 1960’s, but the BA degree, though widely in use since 1908, stayed as an unofficial academic degree, and finally was discontinued on 1971.
