Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
  • The manuscript length is between 5000-6000 words (excluding references).

Author Guidelines

The journal publishes papers and other texts concerning spatial planning and housing, as well as book reviews. Peer reviewed papers are usually published within six months of submission, while we aim to publish all other texts in the following issue. The editorial board assembles four times a year to discuss submitted texts.

Submission is done through journal.fi/yhdyskuntasuunnittelu using the “make a new submission” function. Each author is responsible for the language of the submission and should arrange language checking themselves if required. Authors should also upload a title page listing the article's full title  and the full name of each author with degree information and current affiliation and full postal and email address. All visual materials must be submitted as separate files. Authors are responsible for the content they submit to the journal.

Papers

The editor-in-chief reads all submitted papers first and then, together with the journal’s editorial board, decides on the review process. Full papers are normally sent out to three reviewers out of which one may be a member of the editorial board. The review process usually begins within a month of submission. Accepted papers are normally published within six months.

Manuscripts should be 5000-6000 words (excluding references). They should begin with an ingress, which is 50-100 words long. Pictures, figures and tables are counted as 1000 characters each. All visual materials will be published in black and white format. The journal follows the peer review standards set by the Federation of Finnish Learned Societies (TSV). All submitted text and attached files should be anonymous to ensure double-blind peer review.

An abstract of 100 words in both English and Finnish should also be submitted, together with 3-5 keywords in both languages.

Pictures, figures and tables should be placed in the text and submitted as separate files. The author should have copyright to all materials.

Current texts concerning urban planning and housing

Manuscripts for non-peer reviewed texts concerning spatial planning and housing should not extend 10 000 characters. All sources should be clearly referenced and listed in full at the end of the text (see below). The views expressed by the authors are their own.

Opinions and comments

The journal also publishes opinions and comments on current urban planning and housing issues. These should be 4000-6000 characters long.

Book reviews

Manuscripts should include the full title of the book, page numbers and ISBN number. Review authors are invited to give their text a title. The length of the reviews is 4000-8000 characters.

Classics reviewed

In this section the journal reviews books that can be considered classics within the field of urban planning and housing. They should be 10, 20, 30 and so on years old. The length of the reviews is 4000-8000 characters.

References

The same author with publications from the same year are separated with letters (Thorpe, 1995a, 1995b).
