During the 1990s and the 2000s, one ideal of Finnish wooden housing areas was based on the “dense and low-rise” development, favouring 1 – 3 storey high construction. Starting from the year 2011, it became possible to build wooden apartment houses 3 – 8 storeys high without deviation decisions. The paper discusses how the historical concept of Nordic Wooden Town, dense and low-rise development, and town planning goals were mutually related, and how changes gradually took place. The dense and low-rise principle is currently largely forgotten. Wooden construction, in turn, has proved suitable for various heights and urban diversity.
