Abstract

Detailed planning is used for outlining the cityscape, architecture, colours and façade materials of new neighbourhoods. The study applies content analysis to examine fourteen detailed plans, design guidelines and colour plans in new neighbourhoods in the capital area of Helsinki. The study presents the tools that have been used to guide and to inspire the architect in the building design phase. Applied colour concepts, colour plans and architectural drawing types are also described. Two types of colour strategies by urban planners are identified: general principles used by the urban planners and architectural regulations for building designers.
