Abstract

We examine the construction of housing pathways in the suburbs and how the values associated with place of residence change and evolve at different stages of the housing pathway. The results show that at different stages of the housing path, residents' relationship with the area changes. When moving to a neighbourhood, the emphasis is on the smoothness of everyday life, economy of the household and familiarity of the area, and when settling in, on proximity to nature and a sense of community. The key to the rooting phase is that the positive perceptions associated with the area appear to be secure for the future. The results provide new insights into how values about the neighbourhood and housing change along the individual's housing pathways and how residents' shared understanding of the neighbourhood and its relationship with other areas and places in the city become part of their housing trajectories.
