Abstract

The paper examines the connections of Finnish suburban construction with regional planning and the regional perspective from the perspective of institutional change. The analysis is based on Riitta Hurme's and Johanna Hankonen's studies of Finnish neighbourhood units. Their considerations regarding regional planning are incorporated into the description of institutional change from the 1940s to the end of the 1960s. The idea of regionalism originally influenced the neighbourhood concept that was adopted in Finland. Even later, the regional perspective influenced suburban construction. These connections can be perceived from an institutional perspective. In this way, changes in suburban construction can also be understood better than by only looking at the structural features of the suburban unit.
