Abstract

This article presents a study that aimed to identify students’ perceptions of learner corpora in data-driven learning (DDL). As part of a DDL pilot course offered to language majors at the university of Jyväskylä, students were introduced to the Finnish National Certificates learner corpus and asked to write an essay to reflect on how to use the corpus for pedagogical and research purposes. Content analysis reveals that most students found the corpus well suited for classroom activities and language studies. The main areas mentioned by the students were grammar and errors but various other possibilities were also mentioned. Research and pedagogical applications were very much the same. Students also pointed out that there are problems relating to the classroom use of the corpus mainly because of the fact that authentic learner language is not without errors and because most applications are often time-consuming and require careful planning.
