Abstract

The aim of this article is to analyze which concept levels immersion students and L1 students in grade 9 appear to favor, and what kind of content and characteristics they give to the concepts in their text when they write on the subject ‘It is now going to be winter in Finland’. The study carries out a concept analysis of ‘rain’ and ‘snow’ on the basis of the students’ texts on the theme provided. The results of the study suggest that both student groups share conceptually the same kind of knowledge of winter in Finland, but that there are some differences in the way Finnish- and Swedish-speaking L1 students on the one hand, and the immersion students on the other, have decided to share their knowledge and experience of the concepts to the imagined recipient. The analysis forms part of the BeViS project, where the aim is to find out how immersion students of different ages express their content-specific knowledge via a second language. The focus is on how students combine their knowledge of the language with their knowledge of the subject matter, and how students express and develop their conceptual worlds.
