This article examines how the first language is used as a resource in interaction that aims at second language learning. The data consist of videotaped interaction in an immersion kindergarten, in a group of fifteen children and two educators, during their first two years in immersion. The children speak Finnish as their first language. The educators speak Swedish in all situations but they understand Finnish. With the method of conversation analysis, the study analyses how the first language is used as an interactional resource both at the initial stages and during the second year. The results show that the use of first language enhances collaborative learning especially at the initial stages. Later, it functions as a means of participating in conversations, and showing understanding of Swedish. Furthermore, it creates a context for the first uses of Swedish, and functions as a means of initiating interaction.
