Abstract

This article discusses reading circles of adult Finnish as a second language (L2) learners in integration training. The books that were read were easy-to-read fiction. The focus is on how the readers interpret what they read and what kind of support they need for this. The analysis utilizes the concept of scaffolding, used in socio-cultural theory. The readers’ interpretations vary from what is literally said in the text to creating their own, personal interpretations of the hidden meanings of the text. It is found that the L2 learners do not always produce a personal interpretation but only a literal one. They can, however, create personal interpretations if they are scaffolded in the reading circle by the teacher and other readers.
