Abstract

Traditionally, Finnish as a mother tongue has been separated from other school languages. Developing learners’ wider language repertoire has not been in focus or seen as an aim or underpinning value. This article discusses how mother tongue teaching could promote learners’ plurilingualism. First, features of effective language teaching are discussed. Special attention is paid to language learning with and through other learning. Then, teaching tradition is explored through textbook analysis. Finally, some characteristics of plurilingual education are described and examples of good practices presented.
