Abstract

This article examines how linguists can use the methods of research-based development to enhance interaction practices in a multilingual work community and to put research findings into practice. Based on employee interviews and the research carried out in the project Multilingual worklife and means of participation, we have created language user profiles that reflect factors influencing language learning and attitudes towards multilingualism at the workplace. Language user profiles can be used to illustrate the challenges associated with multilingual work communities and the different needs that adult language learners may have. The article describes the research-based development process, presents the language user profiles that emerged from the process, and shows how they can be used in work communities to support language learning, develop interaction practices and strengthen employees’ experience of inclusion.
